Welcome to the Year 6 Romania Class page!

Class teachers: Miss Lilley and Mr Brindley

Current topic: A Child's War

P.E days: Monday and Wednesday

Class reading book: Goodnight Mr Tom

We are hugely excited for the super learning opportunities that are planned for this year! We hope you all had a restful summer break and the students are ready to work hard in their final year of primary school at Welland Academy!

Our first exciting topic is called 'A Child's War'. The children will be teleported back to 1939, the start of World War 2. They will learn about the causes of the war and why child evacuees had to make the long journey from their homes and family into unknown territory. Throughout the topic, we will have five key questions, which will be the focus of our learning. We will build on the students' knowledge of the war using research and immersive experiences. Our trip to Beaumanor will also further their learning in this area.

In writing, we will start by looking at 'The Journey', a book about refugees, who must flee a war-torn country for their safety. We will repeat our lessons for writing in the same way we did last year, using Jane Considine's methods. Each unit is about 3 weeks long, with an independent writing piece to end the unit. Our second unit will follow Jane Considine's sentence stacking style but will be leading up to writing a persuasive speech, encouraging young men to fight in the war. There will be a big push on handwriting once again this year. This will be practised at least three times a week in class. In maths, we will begin with place value. We will complete a baseline assessment to inform us on the students' gaps in knowledge.

Our class reading book is Goodnight Mr Tom. This is read to them every day. We encourage the students to read every day at home, making sure they bring in their reading record each day to be checked. We have a whole class reward system for reading, whereby if the students read they can add their initials to our class reward sheet. If the whole class collectively reads 200 times, we will have a whole class treat - this could involve an extra playtime, P.E lesson or part of an afternoon, where they can choose what they'd like to do. Homework and spellings will be sent out on a Friday and will need to be completed / practised ready for the following Thursday please. They will also need to make sure they are finding time to complete Doodle and TT Rockstars at home. All logins are in their reading record books.
