Vision and Values

In Year 6, we want all pupils to feel part of an inclusive and positive learning environment where they are motivated to work hard and take pride in their work. Kindness and collaboration are also key values in our classroom. Everyone in Year 6 should feel like a valued and respected member of a class that works together as a team. Our Academy rules encourage the children to be ready, be safe and be respectful.

Curriculum Information

English: Over the course of the year, we will be using Jane Considine's "The Write Stuff" teaching units. As part of this, we will be using our "Writing Rainbows" to create excellent pieces across a range of genres. This will help us improve our vocabulary, sentence structure and writing composition. We will be looking at a variety of stories including the story of The Journey and writing our own narratives and later in the term we will be writing letters connected to our Battles and Blitz unit.

Maths: Throughout the year, we will be working with numbers up to 10,000,000, recognising the value of the digits and securing the four operations before moving onto fractions, decimals and percentages.

PE will take place on Monday and Friday afternoons. Children must arrive at school wearing their school PE kits.

Autumn 1: Lacrosse and Gymnastics

Autumn 2: Football and Dance

Spring 1: Hockey and Leadership skills

Spring 2: Gymnastics and Health-Related Fitness

Science: This is taught every week. Within the lesson, the children wil be expected to work scientifically, write predictions, test their ideas and write their own conclusions.

Topics that will be covered over the year are as follows:

Living things and their habitats.

Electricity

Animals including humans

History: This half-term, we will be studying the unit Battles and Blitz. In this unit, we will be looking into the Second World War. For history, we will be looking at what caused the war, its impact on British civilians and important historical events during this time. We will also be visiting Beaumanor Hall in connection to our unit. The children will also learn about the Mayans, they will learn who they were, where they lived and make comparisons between then and now.

Music- We will be working with our specialist music teacher mastering the African drums as well as singing, composing and using a range of musical instruments.

Geography: They will be learning about world trade and from this holding their own enterprise week.

Homework

Our approach to homework this year is building children's basic skills. As a result, children should be accessing TT rockstars and reading their AR reading books every day. Homework will be set on our new home learning platform Atom Learning where they will have one piece a week. This will be released every Wednesday, and they will have a week to complete it.

Reading at Home

We would like all children to read at home as much as possible. At Welland, we want to encourage a love of reading for our children- please encourage them to read a wide range of books to support their reading but also for their own personal enjoyment. We will send the children home with AR books from our library.
