Modern Foreign Language

Intent

Learning a foreign language provides an opening to other cultures. Language education promotes curiosity and an understanding of the wider world. Teaching Spanish at Welland Academy allows the children to experience a culture and language which they may not know. We want our children to experiment with new languages and cultures in a fun and creative way. The MFL curriculum is planned so that all children are able to hold basic conversations about a variety of topics, provided the opportunity to revisit previous vocabulary whilst learning in an interactive way.

Implementation

At Welland Academy, we follow the National Curriculm. The Key Stage 2 aims are as follows:

  • understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of authentic sources
  • speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, finding ways of communicating what they want to say, including through discussion and asking questions, and continually improving the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation
  • can write at varying length, for different purposes and audiences, using the variety of grammatical structures that they have learnt
  • discover and develop an appreciation of a range of writing in the language studied

The long term plan for the study of Modern Foreign Languages has been designed to ensure clear progression upon previous language learnt. Every year group will also have opportunities to recap previous years' units.

Through the use of our language scheme 'Language Angel', Welland Academy children will have opportunities to express their thoughts and ideas in Spanish, understand and respond to speakers: in both speech and writing.

Impact

The impact of the quality of education within Modern Foreign Languages will be seen in pupils' progression during assessment, session tasks and pupils' voice. Children's abilities to use past knowledge and apply it to the current units will demonstrate their progression and retrieval capabilities.
