Science

Intent

At Welland Academy, we encourage children to be inquisitive throughout their time at school and beyond. Our Science curriculum fosters a healthy curiosity in children about our universe and promotes respect for the living and non-living. We believe Science encompasses the acquisition of knowledge, concepts, skills and positive attitudes. At Welland Academy we encourage pupils to aspire when looking to the future, and value tangible experiences. Pupils at Welland Academy should experience cross-curricular and stimulating lessons that equip them with skills and critical thinking for the future whilst applying their use of spoken language and extent of vocabulary.

Implementation

Science is taught through the areas of learning in accordance with the EYFS framework and the National Curriculum for Ks1 and KS2. Topics are carefully planned in sequence to ensure new learning is built upon prior knowledge and experiences.  Opportunities to develop children’s ability to work scientifically are embedded within lessons to develop their skills throughout their school journey.

Knowledge organisers are used to make new vocabulary and learning explicit to children . They are displayed in classes so that children can revisit key language and link to prior learning in lessons. Retrieval is used regularly to revise prior learning, reinforce key information and correct  misunderstandings. This regular revision of key knowledge allows pupils time to embed this into their long term memory. Enhancements through trips and outside visitors enrich learning experiences. Science week and Eco-Committee serve to raise the profile of the subject at key points throughout the year.

Impact:

We measure the impact of our science curriculum in the following ways:

  • Tracking of knowledge in pre and post learning quizzes,

  • Pupil discussions about their learning;

  • Assessment via Insights to support progress and attainment .
